Mill Farm is a 40-acre working farm in the Hengrave Conservation Area with a
Caravan and Motorhome Club Certificated Location.
The CL site is in a small stream-side meadow overlooking the valley of the River Lark, and the river is the eastern boundary of the farm. Dogs are welcome (on a lead), and visitors are asked to please keep clear of horses and their riders. Mill Road is a quiet cul-de-sac leading down to the river, and from there a river-side public footpath runs all the way upstream to Bury St Edmunds.
The 18th Century Listed farmhouse was once attached to a water-mill, demolished in the 1930’s. The mill-pond beside the road is part of the owner’s garden.

The History of Mill Farm In 1186/90 the Mill called 'Salmondesford' (Mill Farm) was leased by Abbott Samson of St Edmund's Abbey to William of the Granary. A series of Estate maps illustrate Mill Farm, the earliest being the map of Hengrave Hall Estate drawn in 1588. The boundaries between Hengrave, Culford and Fornham St Genevieve meet at the Mill and there are maps of 1769 and 1793 showing the farm. The riverside meadows were extremely valuable for grazing and are named on the 1588 map. Palfrey Meadow (now a County Wildlife Site) is the one nearest to the caravan field. |
